Was Agnes Morford the wife of John Alley of Greene County Pennsylvania?

My Interest in the Morford Family

I have been trying to reconstruct the family of Daniel Morford since I discovered a lot of autosomal DNA matches to his descendants. I eventually figured out that his wife was Rachel Dye, a sister of my ancestor Anna Grace Dye, who married John Long in Pennsylvania. Daniel and Rachel had a son James Morford who married Jane Kennedy, whom I later figured out was most likely the paternal grandmother of my ancestor Jackson Long. Daniel and Rachel also had a son John Morford who provided surety for the marriage of William Kennedy (Jane's brother) and Esther Romine in Frederick County Virginia in 1795. That reinforces that these Greene County families (Morford, Kennedy, and Long) were all closely connected.

Morford historians suggest a connection between the Morford family and the Alley family. Various trees, including at familysearch.org, have suggested that Agnes Morford married Jonathan Buford Alley, and died in 1790 in Metamora County Indiana with no children identified before Jonathan married a second time (https://www.familysearch.org/en/tree/person/about/L5YK-TZ8). But I think that is a case of mistaken identity. Instead notes in the Morford Historian newsletter suggest that Agnes married a John Alley (Jr.), and there are records that suggest that that John lived in Greene County PA along with several of the Morfords.

Biography of Daniel Morford

"Daniel, born Oct. 1740, probably in Woodbridge, Middlesex Co.  (His Revolutionary War pension application, S-16209 NJ, made 1 May 1833 when he was past 92 years of age, and admittedly forgetful, gives the county name as "Woodford"  even though  his service was in Middlesex Co.); died in Brown Co., Iowa, 1 July 1833.  His wife was Rachel, her surname not learned.  They moved to Virginia (the part which a few years later  became Mason and Bracken Counties, Ky.)  about 1787, remaining  there 40 years; in 1827 moved to Brown Co., Ohio.  Neither the DAR nor the State of Ohio has record of his burial place; it  is likely that his body was brought back to Kentucky and  interred in a family cemetery near Locust Creek, Bracken Co.  He had a large family, his known or presumed children being:  Daniel Jr., born ca. 1761, m.  Margaret -- --, both living 1850; John D., ca. 1763-1840, m.  1st Rachel -- --, m.  2nd  Mrs. Mary Lewis; James, 1766-1839, m.  1st 1790 in Va.  Jane  (or Jean) Kennedy, m.  2nd ca. 1838 Mrs.  Elizabeth Campbell,   he was a Pioneer of Greene Co., Pa.; a dau.  who prob.  m. John Alley Jr. ; Miles, died 1842, m. Polly Alter, lived in Clermont Co., Ohio; Elizabeth, m.  1796 Thomas Selvage;  Sarah, 1777- 1852, m. 1798 James Rice and moved to Brown Co., Ohio; and perhaps others."

Morford-Alley Connection in Greene County

Also, records in Greene County are consistent with the Alley-Morford connection, including a deed between John Alley and James Morford in 1813, as noted in another issue of the Morford Historian: "ALLEY-MORFORD: John Alley of Wayne Twp., Greene Co. Pa., agreed 25 Dec 1813 to make "deed of inheritance" to James Morford of the same place, for 255 acres of land "where Alley now lives", in Wayne Twp. Did this imply that Alley was A relative of Morford?" https://www.34hotrod.com/genealogy/morford-help/vol1-no1.pdf

Transcription of the 1813 agreement between John Alley and James Morford:

Articles of Agreement
Made and concluded on the twenty-fifth day of December, Anno Domini one thousand eight hundred and thirteen, between John Alley of Wayne Township in Greene County of the one part, and James Morford of Greene Township in Greene County of the other part.

Witnesseth:

That the said John Alley doth hereby covenant and agree to make and deliver unto the said James Morford a good, clear, indefeasible deed of inheritance of and to two hundred and twenty-five acres of land, situate in Wayne Township, adjoining lands of John Irwin, James Lemmon, Elijah Burge, and Thomas Lemmon—being the same tract of land whereon the said Alley now lives.

The said John Alley also conveys and assigns over unto the said James Morford all his right and title in and to a piece of land adjoining the above-described tract, containing thirty-five acres (more or less), which vacant land was bought by said Alley of Adam Cox.

If there should be more than four hundred and twenty-five acres in the above-described tract, the said Morford agrees to pay Alley for the overflow at a proportionable rate to the whole price herein mentioned. If there should be less than 225 acres, then Alley agrees to make a proportionable deduction.

The deed is to be made on or before the first day of March next.

For and in consideration of which, the said James Morford doth hereby agree to pay the said John Alley one thousand dollars lawful money of Pennsylvania, payable as follows:

  • One hundred and ten dollars on hand
  • Two hundred and ninety dollars on the first day of April next
  • One hundred and twenty dollars yearly thereafter until the remaining six hundred dollars is fully paid

For the performance of the above, the parties bind themselves each to the other in the penal sum of one thousand dollars.

At the making of the deed, the said James is to secure the residue of the purchase money by mortgage on the land, if required by said Alley.

Reconstructing the Family of James Kennedy and Rachel Baker

This post summarizes my efforts to reconstruct the family of James Kennedy and Rachel Baker.

We know the identify of James Kennedy, originally from Chester County, Pennsylvania, through four main sources: his marriage record, tax lists, DNA evidence, and a history recorded by his grand-nephew William Kennedy in “A History of the Russell and Kennedy Families” dated 23 November 1858. In that history, William stated that “James Kennedy I know almost nothing of. They went south in an early day. They preferred being Quakers. I think from what I can gather he was apt to get drunk.”

James Kennedy married Rachel Baker on 22 October 1755 at Swedes’ Church (now Philadelphia Monthly Meeting) in Philadelphia.

In the 1783 tax list for Warrington Township, York County, Pennsylvania, James Kennedy is listed as having 9 people in the household, and his son Joshua Kennedy is listed separately as a single man. This suggests that James may have had at least 8 children altogether (seven kids not including Joshua, plus James and his wife).

This is a summary of the likely children of James Kennedy (and Rachel Baker):

1. Joshua b. circa 1758 (inferred from appearance as single male in tax record in 1779). He was taxed in Frederick County Virginia in 1790 and 1791. He married Ann (Sill) Gray (his cousin, the daughter of his father's sister Isabella). He died after 1820 in Clermont Co, Ohio. It is unsure who he is named for? No known descendants?

2. Jesse b. circa 1760? Presumably named for maternal grandfather Jesse Baker.  He presumably married Elizabeth Bailey on 27 Oct 1789 in Cumberland Co, PA. He was taxed in Frederick County Virginia from 1793 to 1804. He then lived in Greene County Pennsylvania through 1830 census, and then removed to Licking County Ohio, where he died after 1840. A descendant of his hypothesized son, Daniel Kennedy (b. 1806 in Pennsylvania) does not match Kennedy Y DNA but instead matches Curry men with ties to Virginia. However, there are clear autosomal DNA connections between the descendants, this suggests that Daniel's mother was a daughter of James.

3. Jane b. circa 1769? She married James Morford 12 Oct 1790 in Frederick County VA, with surety by John Marford (probably John Morford, older brother of her husband). She died 3 Jan 1837 in Greene Co, PA. She was presumably named for her paternal grandmother Jane Gray Kennedy, a matrilineal descendant is a mitochondrial DNA match to a matrilineal descendant of Rachel Baker’s aunt.

4. William b. circa 1767? William married Esther Romine on 4 Sep 1795 in Frederick County, Virginia. He appears to have lived in a separate household in Frederick County from 1795-1804 according to property tax records, while other Kennedys (other than the Hugh below) had left (to Pennsylvania?). He was presumably named after his paternal grandfather. He is a Y DNA match to descendants of his uncle William.

5. James b. circa 1769? Married Elizabeth, maiden name unknown about 1800. He moved to Licking County, Ohio by 1820 and died in Paulding County, Ohio, after 1850. He was presumably named for his father James Kennedy. I have been attempting to contact direct patrilineal descendants, but most lines have died out except for possible descendants of William Herbert Kennedy. There is also a family of a Francis Ziegler from Ohio whose mother was a Rachel Ziegler and whose father was unknown on his marriage certificate, but some trees have identified his father as a "Cannaday" and there were descendants of James in Muskingum County Ohio during the period.

6. Mother of David Kennedy b. 1793 of Greene County Pennsylvania. She was likely born in the late 1760s or early 1770s. A descendant of David Kennedy does not match the Y DNA but matches autosomal DNA.

7. Mother of Mary Buchanan, she was likely born in late 1760s or early 1770s. Mary Buchanan was born on 10 October 1789, in Virginia, United States. She had at least 3 sons and 4 daughters with Mahlon Hartley Junior. She lived in Macon Township, Bureau, Illinois, United States in 1860 and Stark, Stark, Illinois, United States in 1870. She died on 18 March 1881, in Laurel Township, Hocking, Ohio, United States, at the age of 91. Her descendants are autosomal DNA matches to others in this family. I am seeking a matrilineal descendant to do a mitochondrial DNA test.

8. Unknown?

One possibility is that Sarah Kennedy, the daughter of Ann Sill, is another child if Rachel died and James remarried to Ann Kennedy, but that is speculative. There are no records for this Sarah after 1779 will.

Another possibility is that John Kennedy who married Isabella Gray in Frederick County, Virginia on April 2, 1797 could be a son of James Kennedy. Some correspondence by researchers (at Family search full text) suggested that they are parts of a different family (son of a Samuel Kennedy and an unrelated Gray family).

There is confusion regarding whether the Hugh Kennedy who was a large property owner (and owner of slaves) in Frederick County before moving to Kentucky is related. He seems to be distinct from the Hugh Kennedy of Allegheny County who was James’ brother.

Timeline

By 1779, James appears to have lived with his family in Warrington Township, York County, Pennsylvania, adjacent to his brother Hugh Kennedy and nephew William Kennedy, a known Miller. By 1782, both Hugh Kennedy and his son William Kennedy had moved to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.[11]
